Solar panel technology keeps moving, and homeowners in Manipur now have a real choice to make. Two cell technologies dominate what is available here: Mono-PERC and TOPCon.
Mono-PERC is what we have installed on most Eartheners rooftops over the years, because it balances reliability, output and cost better than anything else at the price. TOPCon is the newer generation, and we now quote it alongside Mono-PERC against every system size on our rooftop solar price list — so it is an option you can take today, not one to wait for.
Both are good technologies. The right choice depends on your roof, your electricity use, your budget and how long you plan to hold the asset.
What Mono-PERC Panels Are
Mono-PERC stands for Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell — a monocrystalline cell with an added reflective layer at the back, so light that would otherwise pass straight through gets a second chance to be converted. It has been the mainstream rooftop technology worldwide for years.
Its strength is that it is thoroughly proven. Millions of installations, well-understood failure modes, a mature supply chain and a lower price per kilowatt.

- Your roof has enough space that squeezing more out of each panel is not the constraint
- Value for money is the deciding factor
For most homes in Imphal and across the valley, Mono-PERC still does everything a rooftop system needs to do: cut the MSPDCL bill sharply, run for decades, and pay for itself.
What TOPCon Panels Are
TOPCon stands for Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact. It is built on the same monocrystalline base, but uses an n-type wafer with an ultra-thin oxide layer under the rear contact. That layer cuts the electrical losses that happen where the metal contact meets the silicon.
Two consequences matter to a homeowner. First, more of the sunlight that lands on the panel ends up as usable electricity — so a TOPCon panel produces a little more from the same physical area. Second, n-type silicon is not subject to the light-induced degradation that affects p-type cells like Mono-PERC in their first weeks of operation, so it holds its rated output more steadily over the years.
The step up
TOPCon suits you if
- Roof space is tight and you need every square foot to work harder
- Your consumption is high and you want to maximise generation
- You expect to hold the system for its full life and care about the last few years as much as the first
- You are comfortable investing a little more upfront
Where the Difference Actually Shows Up
Day to day, the two look identical on a roof and both quietly reduce your bill. The gap opens up in four specific conditions.
Limited roof space
This is the clearest case. A higher-efficiency panel gives you more kilowatts on the same rooftop. If your roof cannot physically hold the system size your bill calls for, TOPCon can close part of that gap.
Cloudy and monsoon weather
Manipur gets long overcast stretches. Both technologies keep generating under cloud; TOPCon generally does a little better in weak light — early mornings, late afternoons, heavy monsoon days.
Summer heat
Every panel loses efficiency as it heats up, and a rooftop panel runs hotter than the air around it. TOPCon holds its output better as temperature climbs, so the loss on the hottest afternoons is smaller.
Year fifteen and beyond
All panels degrade slowly. TOPCon's n-type cells resist some of the degradation mechanisms that affect p-type cells, so more of the original output is still there late in the system's life.
None of these is dramatic on any single day. They accumulate. Over 25 years they add up to a meaningfully larger total of electricity generated from the same roof.

Worth knowing
Where TOPCon earns its money. Every row in the right-hand column is a small margin, not a leap. What makes them worth paying for is that they all point the same way and they all keep applying for 25 years — more from the same roof, on the hottest afternoons and the dullest monsoon mornings, and still doing it in year twenty.
If your roof is the thing limiting your system size, that is the case for TOPCon in one sentence. If it is not, read on — the next section is the argument against.
What This Means for Your Subsidy
Here is the part that is easy to miss. Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the residential subsidy in Manipur is a flat ₹85,800 — it does not scale with what you spend. Both the Mono-PERC and the TOPCon panels we supply are bi-facial and DCR-compliant, so both qualify for exactly the same amount.
Which means the entire TOPCon premium comes out of your own pocket. That is straightforward to justify when roof space is your binding constraint, and much harder to justify when it is not.

Does TOPCon Replace Mono-PERC?
No — and we would be overselling if we said it did.
TOPCon is an additional option, not a successor that makes the other obsolete. Plenty of homes will get everything they need from a Mono-PERC system, particularly where the roof is large enough that a slightly higher yield per panel changes nothing about the system you would install anyway.
What TOPCon does is give you a second path: pay a little more upfront, get a little more electricity every year for the life of the system. Whether that trade is worth making is a question about your roof and your bill, not about which technology is “better”.
The honest version
Ask us at the site survey
We measure your shadow-free roof area and read your MSPDCL consumption before recommending anything. If your roof is comfortably large for the system you need, we will usually tell you Mono-PERC is enough — and we would rather say that than sell you the more expensive panel.

So Which One Should You Choose?
Rather than asking which technology is better, the more useful question is which one is right for your home.
Start with three things: how much shadow-free roof you actually have, what your monthly bill is, and how long you intend to keep the house. If the roof is generous and the bill is moderate, Mono-PERC is very likely the right answer. If the roof is the limiting factor, or you are running a heavy load, TOPCon earns its premium.
