“Can I pay for this monthly?” is one of the first questions we get after a price. The short answer is yes — rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a recognised category of bank lending in Manipur, and it is a normal home loan product, not a special scheme you have to argue for at the counter.
Whether you should take one is a separate question, and this page is not going to push you either way. Plenty of our customers pay cash and are glad they did. Plenty finance it and are equally glad. What follows is what a bank will actually offer, so you can work out which one you are.
What a Solar Loan in Manipur Looks Like
| Term | What a bank will offer |
|---|---|
| Interest rate | Roughly 5.75% to 11%, depending on the bank and on you |
| Tenure | Up to 10 years |
| Margin money | 10% of the system cost up to ₹2 lakh, 20% above that |
| Processing fee | Varies by bank — ask before you sign |
| Prepayment | Allowed, with no prepayment penalty |
That interest band is wide because it is a real band. Where you land inside it depends on the bank, your existing relationship with them, and your credit record. Nobody can tell you your rate over the phone, and anyone who does is guessing.
Margin Money — the Part People Miss
Margin money is your own contribution, paid at the start. The bank lends the rest.
It is calculated on the full system cost, before the subsidy — 10% of it up to ₹2 lakh, and 20% on anything above that. This catches people out, because it is natural to assume the bank works from the post-subsidy figure. It does not.
If you are financing the system, the margin money is the only cash you need on day one. The bank pays us the rest directly, and your repayments begin from there.
Worked example — 3 kW, our smallest system
System cost ₹1,79,000. Margin money at 10% is ₹17,900. Interest from 5.75%, tenure up to 10 years.
This is an example, not a quote
The figures above are for a 3 kW on-grid system only. Larger systems can be financed the same way, on the same terms — the numbers simply scale.
Current prices for every size are on our rooftop solar price list for Manipur.
How the Subsidy Applies to a Loan
Under PM Surya Ghar, the residential subsidy in Manipur is a flat ₹85,800 for systems of 3 kW and above. On a cash purchase it lands in your bank account within two months of commissioning, often sooner.
On a loan it works differently. The ₹85,800 subsidy is credited to your loan account and reduces the outstanding. It does not come to you as cash, because the bank has already paid the full amount to us on your behalf.
Work Out Your Own Instalment
We do not publish a monthly figure, because we cannot know your rate, your tenure or your loan amount — and a number we invented would be a number you remembered. So the calculator below is yours to drive. Put in the loan amount you expect, move the rate and the tenure, and see what comes out.
Your numbers, not ours
The system cost minus your margin money. Change it to whatever you expect to borrow — anything from ₹10,000 to ₹50,00,000.

Total interest over the term ₹—
The ₹85,800 subsidy is credited to your loan account and reduces the outstanding, so what you actually repay is less than the figure above. Processing fees vary by bank and are not included here. This is arithmetic on the numbers you entered — your bank's sanction letter is the only figure that binds.
If you want the other half of the picture — what a system of that size would actually save you every month — our rooftop solar cost calculator for Manipur works that out from your MSPDCL bill.
Who Lends for Rooftop Solar in Manipur
Almost all nationalised banks lend against PM Surya Ghar systems, and so does Manipur Rural Bank.
We have no tie-up with any of them, and we take no commission from any of them. That means we cannot get you a better rate than you can get yourself — but it also means we have no reason to send you to one bank over another. Start with the bank you already hold an account with. An existing relationship is usually worth more at the counter than anything else you can bring.
Cash or EMI — the Honest Comparison
| Paying cash | Taking a loan | |
|---|---|---|
| Day one | Full system cost | Margin money, plus the bank’s fees |
| Timeline | We start once the paperwork clears | Add the bank’s sanction time on top |
| Total paid | The system cost | The system cost plus interest |
| Subsidy | Reaches your bank account | Reduces your loan outstanding |
| Flexibility | Done | Repayable early, with no penalty |
The trade is straightforward. A loan spreads the cost, and it costs more in total. Cash costs less and asks for the whole amount now.
The one thing worth planning for is the sanction time. A bank loan adds weeks to the project — sometimes several — and that is outside our control and outside yours. If you are working to a deadline, that is the part to start early, not the part to leave until the quotation is signed.
Worth knowing
The scheme has a deadline. PM Surya Ghar runs to 31 March 2027. If you intend to finance the system, begin the bank conversation well before that, because the sanction is the slow step and the subsidy claim only starts once the system is commissioned.
What We Do, and What We Do Not
We register you on the national PM Surya Ghar portal, handle the MSPDCL side, install the system and see the subsidy claim through to the end. If you are taking a loan, we will give the bank every document it asks for from our side — the quotation, the specification, the invoice, the commissioning report — and we will do it promptly, because a stalled file is usually a missing paper.
What we do not do is arrange the loan, recommend a bank, or have any say in your sanction. That conversation is between you and your bank, and we would rather tell you that plainly than let you assume we have influence we do not have.
Before you talk to a bank
Get the quotation first
A bank will ask for a written quotation with the system size, the specification and the price before it will discuss anything. We survey your roof, read your MSPDCL consumption and give you that quotation free — no cost, nothing to sign.
Bring it to your bank and you are having a real conversation instead of a hypothetical one.
Common Questions
-
Do I need to take a loan to get the subsidy? No
The ₹85,800 is the same whether you pay cash or finance. The subsidy is tied to the system and to your eligibility, not to how you paid for it.
-
Can I pay the loan off early? Yes
These loans can be repaid early without a prepayment penalty. Confirm it in writing with your own bank before you sign, as with anything else in the sanction letter.
-
Will you tell me what my EMI will be? Not a firm figure
We will not quote you a monthly instalment, because it depends on a rate and a tenure only your bank can set. The calculator above will show you the arithmetic for any combination you want to test.
-
Does a loan delay the installation? It can
The bank's sanction has to complete before work starts, and that timeline is the bank's, not ours. Start it early if you are working to a date.
